Abbreviation ERTOS means a whole era. These are the seven-decade air navigation watch, and the school of great single-piece aviation specialists, and most importantly, thousands of prevented state of emergency in the domestic sky. Does ERTOS deserve special attention? Of course.

In Russia air traffic began to develop actively already in the 20s of the last century. The flight detachment commanders, who conducted visual aircraft taxiing and take-off observation on the airfield, and fixed the time of departure, carried out the first airlines organization and the aircraft movement control. In the late 40-s for the first time in our country, the ERTOS service, which initially was a small technical hub, was organized.

ERTOS functional expanded in unison with technical progress. Over time, it became necessary to work around-the-clock with a wide range of tasks related to the regulations time-consuming forms implementation, all types of maintenance, troubleshooting, equipment repair for validation tests, technical tasks development when carrying out planned activities.
To satisfy the personnel hunger
The extensive technical support service establishment required an entire training program for qualified personnel. Until the 60s. RTOP and aviation telecommunications were provided with the means developed for the Air Force; therefore, the professional staff shortage problem was solved by attracting former military engineers and radio engineering specialists trained by higher and secondary specialized educational institutions of other departments.
The civil aviation intensive development posed the country's leadership the most important task of permanent training of engineering and technical specialists for ERTOS. The problem was eradicated through the creation of industry-specific universities, specialized secondary schools – Riga Civil Aviation Engineers Institute (RKIIGA) – Riga, Kyiv Civil Aviation Engineers Institute (KIIGA) – in Kiev, Moscow Civil Aviation Engineers Institute (MIIGA) – in Moscow. The way the educational system was built also has worked: the training applicable nature and the distribution of graduates with a mandatory three-year period of working out by specialization.
Currently, ERTOS recruit graduates of the widest profile educational institutions. All specialists have a high level of training, possess the obligatory knowledge of information technologies used in the RTOP and aviation communications equipment of the latest generation. Russian graduates tend to get to ERTOS for several reasons. In addition, it is prestigious to work at the ERTOS, which has proven itself from the best side over many years. Another important factor is the employment benefits in the State ATM Corporation is considered to be perhaps the weightiest in the industry.
Inevitable evolution
ERTOS is simply «doomed» to improve constantly. This happens due to the new element base introduction, modern types of equipment and air traffic service technologies. «Initially, RTOP equipment was created on discrete elements: resistors, capacitors, inductors, vacuum radio tubes, and kinescopes. At the next stage, the widespread use of transistors and hybrid microcircuits has significantly reduced the size and power consumption of radio engineering devices. Currently, almost all RTOP equipment operates on the computers and special software basis.»

Today, the Russian policy in the communications development, navigation and surveillance relies on the most advanced technologies, including those recommended by ICAO. In the communications field, data transmission lines and technologies based on CPDLC, D-ATIS, OLDI, AIDC, SWIM and others are widely used, in the navigation field - the introduction of GNSS, GBAS, the ADS-B and MLAT/WAM technologies are used in the surveillance area. An important aeronautical evolution aspect is related to the ATC automation, based on the expansion of its functionality using ground-based safety systems (Ground-based Safety Nets), the use of AMAN / DMAN / XMAN, A-CDM, A-SMGCS systems of all levels, remote and virtual tower (RVT).
